Best Bedside Cribs (Next-to-Me Cribs) for 2026

Updated By CalmBabyGear Editorial 11 min read

The best bedside crib for most families is one that fits your bed height, sits flush against your mattress with no gap, and has a firm, flat mattress included. For most UK homes, the SnuzPod5 and the Chicco Next2Me Magic Evo are the easiest all-rounders, while the Tutti Bambini CoZee XL makes sense if you want a crib that later becomes a cot.

Below we compare seven current next-to-me cribs on their published specs and what the makers state about safety standards. Nothing here replaces the official safe sleep advice, which we summarise and link to further down.

What to look for in a bedside crib

  • Bed height range. The lowered side must line up with the top of your mattress. Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress before you buy, and check it falls inside the crib’s stated range.
  • A secure fix to your bed. Look for straps that go around or under your mattress or bed frame. The aim is no gap at all between the crib and your mattress, ever.
  • The mattress. It should be firm, flat and come with the crib, sized exactly for it. A waterproof cover makes nights with leaks much easier.
  • Safety standard. Bedside cribs in the UK should meet BS EN 1130:2019. Check the maker states this, and look for EN 16890 on the mattress.
  • Weight and age limit. Most cribs here stop at 9 kg or around 6 months, or sooner once baby can sit, kneel or pull up. Plan for what comes next.
  • Feet and frame. Divan beds and beds with solid bases can block the crib’s legs. Folding or slim feet help a lot.

Safe sleep basics

A bedside crib is still your baby’s own separate sleep space, so the usual safer sleep advice applies. The NHS and The Lullaby Trust both recommend keeping baby in the same room as you for every sleep for at least the first six months.

  • Back to sleep. Lay your baby on their back for every sleep, day and night.
  • Feet to foot. Place baby with their feet touching the end of the crib, so they can’t wriggle down under any covers.
  • Flat, firm, waterproof mattress. Use the mattress made for the crib. Baby’s head should barely sink into it, and it should fit with no gaps around the edges.
  • Keep it clear. No pillows, duvets, bumpers, pods, nests or soft toys. A well-fitting baby sleeping bag or a light blanket tucked in firmly is the usual alternative.
  • No gap between crib and bed. Fix the crib firmly with the straps supplied and check it every night. Never fill a gap with pillows or blankets. If you can’t close it, don’t use the crib in side-by-side mode.
  • Side up when detached. If the crib isn’t strapped to your bed, raise the drop-down side fully.

1. SnuzPod5 — best for most families

The SnuzPod5 is a 3-in-1 design: a bedside crib, a lift-off bassinet you can carry to another room, and a standalone crib on its own stand. Snuz states it meets BS EN 1130:2019, with the mattress tested to BS EN 16890.

It comes with a fitted mattress, castor wheels and bed-fixing straps, so there is little else to buy beyond sheets.

  • External size: 97 x 49 x 86.5 cm (90 cm high with wheels)
  • Crib weight: 12.4–12.9 kg depending on finish
  • Mattress: 80 x 44 x 3 cm, included
  • Max child weight: 9 kg; most babies outgrow it around 6 months
  • Height: six positions, roughly 52–71 cm to the top of the adult mattress (per Snuz’s FAQ)
  • Incline: reflux leg tilts one side, for standalone use only with the wall up
  • Standards (as stated by Snuz): BS EN 1130:2019 crib; BS EN 16890:2017+A1:2021 mattress

Good to know: Snuz’s own page gives two slightly different minimum bed heights (49 cm and 52 cm), so measure your bed and check with Snuz if you’re near the bottom of the range. The tilt can’t be used while the crib is attached to your bed.

Not for you if… you have a very low bed or futon.

2. Chicco Next2Me Magic Evo — best for awkward bed heights

The Magic Evo is the current top model in Chicco’s long-running Next2Me range. Its standout spec is 11 height levels, which gives you finer steps to match your mattress exactly.

It also tilts, has a button-activated side-to-side rocking mode and a one-hand sliding side.

  • Dimensions: 99 cm wide x 73.5 cm long x 64–80 cm high
  • Weight: 12.3 kg (as listed at Mamas & Papas)
  • Compatible bed heights: 52–67 cm
  • Height positions: 11
  • Incline: 4 positions, up to 10°
  • Max child weight: 9 kg; 0–6 months
  • Extras: 4 lockable swivel wheels, 3D mesh mattress included
  • Standard: listed as EN 1130:2019 at Mamas & Papas (Chicco’s UK page doesn’t name it)

Good to know: Chicco doesn’t publish the mattress dimensions on its UK page, which matters if you want spare sheets. The maximum bed height is 67 cm, a little lower than the SnuzPod5, so very tall boxspring beds may not fit.

Not for you if… your mattress top sits above 67 cm.

3. Chicco Next2Me Essential — best on a budget

The Essential keeps the core Next2Me idea for less money. You get fewer height steps and a simpler tilt, but still a mattress, mesh windows and folding feet.

  • Dimensions: 98.5 cm wide x 70.5 cm long x 65–80 cm high
  • Compatible bed heights: 49–65 cm
  • Height positions: 6
  • Incline: 2 positions
  • Max child weight: 9 kg; 0–6 months
  • Extras: 2 lockable wheels, foldable feet, 2 mesh windows, mattress included

Good to know: Chicco’s product page doesn’t state the safety standard or the crib’s weight, so check the box or manual for EN 1130 marking before you use it. The 65 cm maximum bed height is the lowest of the cribs here.

Not for you if… you have a tall bed or want a rocking feature.

4. Tutti Bambini CoZee XL — best crib that becomes a cot

The CoZee XL starts as a bedside crib and, with its expandable frame, converts into a cot for roughly 6 months to 2 years. It costs more up front, but it can replace a separate cot purchase.

Tutti Bambini says the crib assembles in about two minutes and the cot in about seven, without tools.

  • Crib size: 90 x 55 x 69–84 cm (L x W x H)
  • Cot size: 131 x 66 x 84 cm
  • Crib mattress: 80 x 50 x 3 cm, included
  • Cot mattress: 120 x 60 cm, sold separately
  • Height positions: 6 (mattress heights from about 49–52 cm up to 64 cm and above)
  • Incline: one side can be set higher than the other
  • Weight: crib 12.5 kg, cot 16.2 kg assembled
  • Standards (as stated): BS EN 1130:2019, EN 716:2017+AC:2019, BS 8509:2008+A1:2011

Good to know: Tutti Bambini doesn’t list a maximum child weight for crib mode on the product page, so check the manual. You’ll need to buy a 120 x 60 cm cot mattress when you convert it.

Not for you if… you already have a cot or want to spend under £200.

5. Joie roomie glide — best for a gentle gliding motion

The roomie glide slides smoothly back and forth so you can soothe your baby without lifting them. A one-touch lock stops the motion when you want it still.

It has an aluminium frame, mesh windows on both sides and folding feet that Joie says suit most beds, including divans.

  • Dimensions (open): 98.5 x 68.5 x 66–81 cm
  • Weight: 11.6–11.9 kg (Joie lists both figures on different pages)
  • Mattress: 84 x 51 x 5 cm, included (from the instruction manual)
  • Height positions: 11
  • Incline: gentle tilt raising the head end
  • Max child weight: 9 kg, from birth
  • Standards (as stated by Joie UK): EN 1130:2019/AC:2020; mattress EN 16890:2017+A1:2021

Good to know: Joie’s manual allows no more than 2 cm difference between your mattress and the lowered side, and the lowered side must not sit higher than your mattress.

Not for you if… you want a crib that converts or travels.

6. Maxi-Cosi Iora Air — best for folding and travel

The Iora Air folds down to just 13.5 cm deep and comes with a travel bag, so it’s the easiest pick here to take to grandparents’ or on a UK holiday. It also rocks and slides.

  • Dimensions: 97 x 52.3 x 74.4–85.7 cm (unfolded)
  • Folded: 91.5 x 55.5 x 13.5 cm
  • Weight: 9.7 kg
  • Height positions: 5
  • Incline: adjustable lying position
  • Max child weight: 9 kg; birth to about 6 months
  • Extras: rocking and sliding functions, two wheels, storage basket, mattress included
  • Standards (as listed): EN 1130:2019; mattress EN 16890:2017+A1:2021

Good to know: Five height steps is the fewest in this list, so double-check your bed height against the range. Some UK retailers showed limited stock in October 2026, and there is also a newer Iora Pro in some shops.

Not for you if… you need fine height adjustment for an unusual bed.

7. babybay Original — best for longer use and solid wood

The babybay is a solid beech co-sleeper that sits right up against your bed, rather than a crib on a stand. babybay says it suits babies up to about 9 months, longer than the others here.

It has a 10-year warranty (with registration) and an optional kit to convert it into a small cot.

  • Lying surface: 81 x 43 cm
  • Outer dimensions: 87 x 46 x 79 cm
  • Height: infinitely adjustable, 12–52.5 cm (top of lying area including mattress)
  • Age: up to approx. 9 months
  • Material: solid beech with saliva-resistant varnish
  • Safety marks (as stated): GS mark, TÜV tested, finishes to EN 71-3; mattresses tested to EN 16890

Good to know: The mattress is sold separately, so budget extra and buy babybay’s own size-matched one. babybay’s page doesn’t mention EN 1130, and the 52.5 cm maximum height is low for many UK divans, though babybay sells accessories to raise it.

Not for you if… you want everything in one box or have a tall bed.

FAQ

Are bedside cribs safe?

A bedside crib that meets BS EN 1130:2019, is fixed with no gap to your bed and is used with its own firm, flat mattress gives your baby a separate sleep space right next to you. The Lullaby Trust notes that bedside cribs sold since 2020 should meet that standard. Follow the safe sleep basics above and the maker’s instructions every night.

How long can a baby sleep in a bedside crib?

Most cribs here are rated to 9 kg or around 6 months. You should stop sooner if your baby can sit, kneel, pull themselves up or push up on hands and knees. The babybay Original is rated to about 9 months.

Will a bedside crib fit a divan or ottoman bed?

Often, but not always. Divans have a solid base, so the crib’s feet need to fold or slide underneath, and the straps need somewhere to go. The Joie roomie glide and Chicco Essential both have folding feet; check the bed height range for any model you consider.

Should I use the incline on a bedside crib?

Official guidance favours a flat sleep surface, and several makers restrict when the tilt can be used. For example, Snuz says its reflux leg only works in standalone mode with the side up. If your baby has reflux, speak to your health visitor or GP before using any tilt.

Can I buy a second-hand bedside crib?

You can, but check it’s a current model with all its original straps and parts, and that it meets BS EN 1130:2019. The Lullaby Trust says any mattress, new or used, should be firm, flat, in good condition and fit with no gaps.

Do I need a special mattress?

Use the mattress designed for your crib. Most of the cribs here include one; the babybay Original doesn’t, so buy babybay’s size-matched mattress. Never add extra padding or a second mattress on top.
